ghU's are student led presentations that explore global public health issues and how they relate to social, economic, political, and cultural factors. These presentations encourage students to look at global health issues from an intersectional lens by providing a space to discuss the multifaceted nature of public health.

Natural Disaster Relief

Natural disasters have obvious primary effects on people and landscapes such as infrastructure destruction and death tolls. However, through mass displacement, overcrowding, and the degradation of sanitary and health systems, area’s impacted by natural disasters tend to have many lasting public health effects. Disease transmission of communicable diseases as well as a plethora of other public health complications in the context of natural disasters are explored in this ghU

The Structural Violence of Hyper-Surveillance In Preventative Health Care 

Intensive monitoring of specific diseases can result in an increased rate of false positives, consequently exaggerating the prevalence of the disease within a population. This exaggeration stemming from hyper-surveillance often leads to unwarranted medical procedures. This not only impacts individual health but also contributes to escalated healthcare costs, diverting resources that could be otherwise directed toward preventive measures.

This ghU navigates the multifactorial nature of burnout, from its prevalence worldwide to its impact on various medical specialties, emphasizing the need for timely recognition, coping strategies, and collective efforts to address this pervasive issue in healthcare.

E-cigarettes have emerged as a public health concern, impacting individuals both physically and mentally. Physically, vaping has been associated with respiratory issues and potential long-term health risks. Additionally, this ghU covers the targeted marketing strategies employed by e-cigarette companies have contributed to a concerning rise in vaping among youth, posing additional challenges to public health efforts.

This presentation dives into the background of micro plastics and in focusing on the Asian Pacific Region it explores the environment justice issues, challenges with Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), and the impact of global waste trade. It also explores the role of sustainable products in exacerbating plastic pollution and discusses the health risks associated with microplastic exposure, emphasizing the need for collective action and sustainable solutions to address these challenges.
